The Story

Italy’s Council of Ministers approved the ‘Dignity Decree’ which provided a blanket ban on all gambling ads and sponsorships, and also set a time frame on how long existing sponsorship contracts should last.

Italian sports leagues vowed to fight tooth and nail to overturn the ban.

Five Star Movement party VP Francesco Silvestri claimed that the transitional period for gambling operators and their sports and media partners to end their existing contracts “will last at most until June 30, 2019.” Silvestri said that they have turned down pleas from some parties to extend their partnerships beyond the June 2019 deadline.

With Italy’s gambling operators shelling out around €120m to sponsor sports teams and leagues, these leagues are expected to conduct intense lobbying efforts to preserve their share of the money.
