The Story

Fixed-odd betting terminal (FOBT) operators have scored a victory after the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) abandoned its initial proposal to enforce a £2 maximum stake on FOBTs.

But operators can’t pop the champagnes just yet.

A Times report said that the gambling regulator will endorse a maximum stake of a £30 or less, in addition to “measures to combat the risk of harm.” In changing its proposal, UKGC said that “there is insufficient evidence to justify” the regulator “recommending a specific figure below £30.” This means that it the £2 maximum stake is still on the table. But for MPs deciding on the issue, it would be prudent for them to consider that imposing a £2 limit will result to millions of pounds of losses and the unemployment of an estimated 21,000 people by 2020.
