The Story

The German Center for Addiction (DHS) has noted that despite the growth of the country's gambling market, gambling participation rate among Germans has fallen in the last eight years.

The drop in the number of gamblers could be traced to two factors.

According to the German Center for Addiction 2018 Yearbook, the gambling participation rate in the country slid to 75.3% in 2017 from 87.1% in 2009. The decline came even when Germany's gambling market sustained a 191.5% increase since the country liberalized its land-based market in 2006. The low gambling participation rate could be attributed to two things: regulation and self-exclusion. German states have released regulations banning online gambling and online casinos. Meanwhile, Germans have also became more willing to seek treatment for problem gambling. Last year, gamblers made up 8% of individuals contacting addiction treatment centers.
