In an expected turn of events, the country’s ruling government coalition voted for a suspensory veto of the online sports betting bill which earlier passed through the National Assembly. |
The chances of getting the bill approved are slim. |
In an 18-12 vote, the National Council voted to veto the measure which would have ended the state-owned Športna Loterija’s sports betting monopoly and allow European Economic Community-licensed operators to apply for online sports betting licenses. There is still hope, however, as the National Assembly can pass the bill through a 2/3 vote during the second round. But if the 35-36 vote during the first round is any indication, it will be a stretch for the proponents of the bill to get the needed votes to overturn the National Council’s veto. |
