The Story

China will step up its campaign against illegal gambling after a high-ranking official claimed that unauthorized gambling has become widespread in the country’s rural areas.

China vows to punish erring operators severely.

Ministry of Public Safety Deputy Minister Huang Ming ordered police to find who are behind the illegal gambling operations in the country’s rural provinces. Huang said the networks of underground banks that help Chinese gamblers fund their betting activity will also be targets of the crackdown. As if the message wasn’t clear, the official reiterated that gambling is “a social harm that posed a threat to national security” and that those individuals involved in illegal gambling and those who will obstruct police investigation will be “harshly punished.”
