The Story

A voter referendum is set to derail the Switzerland government's plan to restrict online gambling operations to local land-based casino operators.

Critics fear that the ban will have implications in other online activities.

The domain-blocking plan is expected to be implemented in 2019. However, Swiss law allows a voter referendum to challenge legislation, provided that 50,000 citizens sign the petition within 100 days from the passage of the challenged law. A coalition of three political parties and the Internet Society Switzerland Chapter (ISOC-CH) had so far collected around 65,000 signatures, 25,000 of which have already been certified. The deadline to certify the other 25,000 signatures is on January 18.
