The Story

Internationally licensed online gambling operators now hold a significant share in Sweden’s overall gambling market.

By how much?

Online gambling operators not holding a Swedish gaming license saw their share rise 11% year-on-year to just over SEK 4b. This figure represents one-quarter of Sweden’s online gambling market.

This also translated to the growth of Sweden’s gambling market.

Sweden’s Lotteriinspektionen gaming regulatory body said that the country’s overall gambling market rose by 3% at SEK 16.5b (US $1.95b) through the first nine months of 2017.

How is Sweden’s gambling monopoly doing?

Not well. The state-owned Svenska Spel reported overall year-to-date sales declining 1% to SEK 6.5b. The decline was due to the lackluster performance of land-based operations.

Anything else that I need to know?

The ATG horserace betting monopoly reported that its land-based sales down 8% to SEK 1.3b while digital ops improved 16% to SEK 1.76b.

Takeaway

International gambling operators should savor their revenue growth now as the Lotteriinspektionen is aboit to make their lives miserable. The state regulator has vowed to crack down on international online operators’ ability to advertise with Swedish-facing media outlets.
