The Story

Malta has become the top destination of more Dutch gambling firms that are avoiding the implementation of Dutch gambling laws in 2019.

Why are they leaving?

Malta’s legal and tax infrastructure, as well as its technical and commercial expertise, are enticing Dutch gambling operators to set up shop in the tiny country.

Those benefits are hard to beat.

Four operators of amusement arcades in the Netherlands believe so, too. Jan Schiffelers, director of Janshen-Hahnraths that holds a Maltese license, said that “the infrastructure and EU membership make Malta the best place to base our operations.”

They are in trouble with the government for sure.

What these companies did was in direct violation of the Netherlands' new coalition government's directive that online gambling operators should maintain some kind of physical presence in the country.

What does the new law entail?

The new law will allow interested international operators to apply for a license from the country’s gambling regulatory body and to operate in a regulated environment.

Takeaway

If the Dutch government continues to consider moves that will restrict gambling operations, expect more companies to bolt out of the country and operate from more accommodating territories like Malta.
