The Story

The administration of casino mogul turned US President Donald Trump finally revealed its stance on the legalization of the sports betting ban—and it isn’t what gambling operators expected.

What is the U.S. government’s stand?

In a brief filed before the Supreme Court, U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco argued that 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) shouldn’t be seen as ‘impermissible commandeering.’ Francisco said that New Jersey’s case may set a precedent on flouting the Supremacy Clause.

Has Trump forgotten his past?

It seems so, considering that he had expressed his support on the legalization of sports betting in the US in the past.

But Americans want sports betting to be legalized!

Exactly. If you recall, the Washington Post published in September the results of a new survey that showed 55% of US adults were in favor of legal sports betting versus just 33% who stated their opposition.

We have to continue sporting New Jersey.

New Jersey has been fighting tooth and nail for the legalization of sports betting, with the U.S. Supreme Court set to hear the case soon. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that sports betting is the best option to revive New Jersey’s casino and race track industries.

Takeaway

New Jersey is waging an uphill battle as it asserts the legalization of sports betting. And with the Trump administration taking an opposing stand, New Jersey’s fight just got tougher.
