The Story

A software seller became the first to be arrested under the Chinese government's new crackdown on the use of virtual private networks (VPN).

The seller was sentenced to nine months in prison.

The South China Morning Post reported that 26-year-old Deng Jiewei of Guangdong province was sent to prison for selling VPN software through websites that he operated. He was charged for “providing software and tools for invading and illegally controlling the computer information system”. Details of his conviction, which was made in March, only surfaced this weekend.

The VPN is the only way for citizens to bypass the “great firewall of China.”

Many Chinese citizens utilize VPN technology to access websites that are prohibited by the government, such as internationally-licensed online gambling sites that offer sports betting and other gaming products outside the Chinese mainland.

China has always exercised tight control on the country's online space.

The crackdown on VPN use started in January when authorities announced a new 14-month program to “clean up” the internet. This include the required official approval of all VPN services in order to stop “illegal cross-border issues” like online gambling. And in July, VPN service provider Green was shut down.

Takeaway

Deng's fate has sent a chilling effect to Chinese netizens as they could face fines just by using VPN. Also, the crackdown will hit internationally-licensed online gambling operators as Chinese punters would rather choose avoiding VPN than risk being jailed.
