The Story

Online gambling operators licensed in the Philippines will now have to accommodate agents of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) Monitoring Team in their bases of operation.

The move is part of the Philippines’ effort to overhaul its gambling industry.

Holders of the new Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) licenses was notified about the deployment of the PMT agents last week. PAGCOR’s Online and Poker Monitoring Unit (OPMU) said that the agents will be assigned to the offices of POGO licensees’ business process outsourcing (BPO) operations, as well as their software providers and live dealer online casino studios.

What will these agents do?

PAGCOR said that the PMT agents will monitor the conduct of POGO operations, examine “all gaming-related activities,” and ensure compliance to the policies issued and requirements imposed by the Philippine state regulator.

Is this really necessary?

It is too early to tell. However, this move by PAGCOR will likely create an environment that may cause POGO licensees to question the value of maintaining their operations in the Philippines.

Takeaway

PAGCOR should weigh the pros and cons of its oversight on POGO license holders so as not to scare them away from investing in the Philippines.
