It would be great for the real people of the world.

The Story

New Jersey has overcome a huge hurdle in its quest to legalize sports betting after the US Supreme Court decided to hear its case.

New Jersey shoots… and scores!

The US SC granted certiorari to two New Jersey petitions regarding lower court rulings that had blocked the state's plans to permit legal sports betting at Atlantic City casinos and state racetracks. The two petitions will be consolidated and will be given an hour for oral arguments during its 2017 session.

So when will we know the court's decision on the case?

With the US SC's 2017 term starting in October and with no specific date given for the oral arguments, it might likely be well into 2018 before the outcome of this case is decided.

Remind me again of the background of this case.

In 2014, the Court declined to hear New Jersey's petition of lower court rulings that blocked its original sports betting legalization plan. New Jersey then passed a second betting legislation, and this time, it followed the guidelines set by the US Solicitor General. However, a District Court rejected the follow-up legislation—leaving an impression to the SC that the federal government was trying to have its cake and eat it too.

Takeaway

This is a huge victory for betting fans as this could possibly put an end to America's antiquated relationship with gambling and sports.
