I doubt that we will abandon the gambling fight with New Jersey.

The Story

California is the latest state to push the lifting of the federal ban on sports betting as New Jersey’s case reaches the US Supreme Court.

But the support comes with a condition.

Assemblyman Adam Gray said that he will propose the amendment of California’s constitution to permit sports betting in the state—provided that the US Supreme Court rules in favor of New Jersey’s case to overturn the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) sports betting prohibition.

Gray said that his proposal is reflective of the Californians’ current reality.

The assemblyman said that Californians are currently betting on sports via any number of internationally licensed online gambling sites, and his amendment will “bring this multibillion dollar industry out of the shadows.”

It won’t be the first time that California mounted this attempt.

A few years ago, the state Senate seriously considered a series of sports betting bills. However, these bills did not take off partly because of the state’s skepticism regarding New Jersey’s chances in the courts.

But with the SC hearing New Jersey, it’s a totally different story.

California joins West Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and South Carolina in looking forward to add sports betting to their list of legal gaming options.

Takeaway

Legislators like Gray should not be fence-sitters and must readily respond to change. Other states should throw their support for New Jersey they would all benefit once sports betting is legalized.
