Gambling is the future on the internet. You can only look at so many dirty pictures.

The King’s New Clothes Isn’t in Stripes

The Story

The former CEO of online sportsbook Legendz Sports Bartice ‘Luke’ King was sentenced to five years of probation, of which the first five months will be spent under house arrest at King’s home in Texas. And he’s got the judge to thank for not putting him in stripes.

Interesting. Please elaborate on that.

King, who was convicted in 2015 on charges of illegal gambling and money laundering conspiracy, was supposed to face up to 41 months in prison. However, US District Judge Stephen Friot did not send King to jail, saying that sports betting isn’t a bane to the society at large. He also cited a letter of a jury foreman who wanted King to undergo probation.

What did the letter say about King?

The jury foreman, in his letter, said that he saw “no threat to society” in granting the King probation. He added that “no one was physically harmed and nobody was forced to place bets.”

The judge really saved King’s ass.

Yup. Aside from that, Friot slammed the DOJ for having engaged in “disheartening” conduct during both its investigation and prosecution of King’s case. He also asked King to pay $12.6 million in penalties instead of the $222 million in cash and other items that the government sought.

Takeaway

With the judge’s unorthodox view on sports betting, there’s still salvation for convicts like King.
