The East End of London in recent days has become the set for a soap opera that would blow the lid off BBC’s version. Every episode of WestHamders is giving the sports book provider’s plenty to think about as they second-guess what exactly is going on.
It was thought that over the weekend everyone’s favourite fall guy, Avram Grant, would be dismissed in favour of appointing former Aston Villa and Celtic manager Martin O’Neill. Now it seems O’Neill saw the latest episode and didn’t like it one bit. It wasn’t so much a show of Phil Mitchell-esque violence; the situation in WestHamders is such that if Grant found a knife in his back he shouldn’t be at all surprised about it.
Then we come to one of Sir Alan Sugar “expert advisors” from the apprentice, Dame Karren Brady.
The Daily Mirror reports that the managing director at the club has apparently been text messaging the club’s senior players to organize a revolt against the Israeli so that he’ll be forced out. Obviously a lot of the weight behind this is due to them not wanting to pay off their manager a substantial sum of money were he to leave, all they’re doing is tarnishing the club’s reputation though.
Football is a results business and sitting bottom of the league doesn’t give Grant much in his favour. Although before the weekend’s game with Arsenal his side has lost once in seven games, are almost in the final of one cup and still in the other one. As for the way Brady, in particular, has treated the manager there should be some kind of charity boxing match on offer for the two of them – Avram would still probably lose that though.
Since the allegations by the Mirror, a statement released by the club denies the earlier allegations and even explains that Grant will remain in the job with money to spend during the transfer window.
Whether he’ll still be in place come the Carling Cup final in late February, should they get there, remains to be seen. What should Grant’s next move be? Show them a thing or two and resign.
