If you happened to be flicking through the sport pages of any national newspaper this morning, you’d be forgiven for coming over all confused. Had something untoward happened during last night’s Champions League Group Game between Tottenham Hotspur and Inter? Was the oft red-faced ‘arry Redknapp trying to frame his own player for doping?
All this came about as no less than three people referred to Tottenham’s (Welsh)man of the moment, Gareth Bale, as a killer. Rafael van der Vaart’s comment read thus: “Maicon is the best right-back in the world but Gareth killed him.”
Alright, so apparently he hadn’t done it in the literal sense. Nice of you to tell all those of us with a lower than average IQ. Real smart! Then Redknapp called out the drug testers on the 21-year-old. This is coming from the favourite to become next England manager – please…
Don’t take anything away from the performance of the youngster and the rest of his colleagues though. The win puts them top of their group and looking a good bet to reach the second stage of the competition. Goals from van der Vaart, Peter Crouch, and Roman Pavlyuchenko, Bale setting up the last two to give the English side a 3-1 victory. William Hill are already offering odds on the winger winning the PFA Player of the Year, at an attractive 10/3.
‘Bale is in the form of his life – and that won’t be going un-noticed by a number of other clubs who’ll be casting envious eyes in his direction,’ Hills spokesman Graham Sharpe said.
Whether or not they’re going to open the book on him being put in the slammer for the slaying of Maicon is unclear.
