PokerStars unveil a new celebrity charity online poker show featuring the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr, Aaron Paul, John Boyega, Mireia Lalaguna Royo, and Sara Sampaio. There was a time when you would have thought an online poker room was barmy for using people who didn’t know how to play poker to promote their game. For many years, online poker rooms used poker’s golden oldies to promote the game. Back then, the focus was on the poker player, so it made sense. Today, that emphasis has shifted. Online poker rooms don’t care about poker players. They care about plumbers, gas fitters, and nurses. Full Tilt adverts used to suggest that you learn, chat and play with the pros. PokerStars adverts suggest to the world that poker is a game played by the modern glitterati of sport, fashion, and the silver screen. It’s a big fat two fingers in the general direction of California and any other land mass that believes the game is a sin. What if the world’s greatest footballer plays the game? What if the star of the greatest TV Box Set in history plays the game? What if the star of the greatest movie franchise in history plays the game? What if the most beautiful women in the world play the game? Poker is hip, young and trendy, and PokerStars use this as their core theme throughout a series of new YouTube videos called PokerStars Duel. The series of 8-10 minute videos show matches between the likes of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona ace Neymar Jr, Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, Star Wars star John Boyega, Victoria Secret Model Sara Sampaio, and former Miss World Mireia Lalaguna Royo. With Team PokerStars Pros Vanessa Selbst, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Andre Akkari, and Felipe Ramos acting as coaches. The players are competing for $5,000 per game in the name of charity. I won’t spoil the action by telling you who wins. The poker isn’t great. The pros will whinge and whine. But who the hell cares? The plumbers, gas fitters and nurses will love it, and in four months time, Santa will be dropping chipsets down everyone’s chimney. Nah, PokerStars aren’t barmy. They are on point. Here are the videos, but apologies to people based in the UK, Ireland and Crown Dependencies. Neymar Jr and Sara Sampaio are little babies and far too young to be appearing in gambling ads/tv shows in those areas, so you won’t be able to access those clips without a VPN.
