Yuri “theNERDguy” Martins has defeated 426 players en route to the Latin American Poker Tour Grand Final title, and Oscar Alache picks up the Player of the Year award.
Brazilians dominated the final table of the Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) Grand Final in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Six of the last eight came from that part of the world, two were from Chile, and it was one of the most well-known Brazilian pros who walked away with the title.
Yuri “theNERDguy” Martins is one of the most successful online poker players in Brazil. The online tournament statisticians at PocketFives have Martins weighing in with over $5m earned since he started playing this beautiful game.
He won a World Championships of Online Poker (WCOOP) bracelet earlier this year when he won a $1,050 Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) Hi/Lo event. The year prior he earned his largest score to date when finishing runner-up to Fedor “CrownUpGuy” Holz in 2014 WCOOP Main Event for $708,251.21.
Martins can now add some live tournament silverware to his collection after his victory in Sao Paulo. The event attracted 426 players, and the final table included 888 Poker Ambassador Bruno Kawauti, who would go on to finish in seventh place.
Martins would face Afonso Henrique in heads-up action and would start with a 2:1 chip lead, but his opponent eventually clawed that back to level terms. It was at this point that the pair agreed to split the money evenly leaving R$118,638 in the middle. That money went to Martins when the pair got it in KQ v K9, and the dominating hand of Martin proved decisive.
