Yan Zhang wins the Asia Pacific Poker Tour 2014 Beijing Cup, and PokerStars LIVE Manila announce the schedule of their first-ever major event – the 2015 Manila Megastack.
Think of a poker tournament, stick the word ‘Beijing’ in the title and watch Yan Zhang go. The Chinese poker player has just won the PokerStars sponsored Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) 2014 Beijing Cup, five months after finishing runner-up in the record breaking 2014 Beijing Millions.
Zhang outlasted 346 players, capturing the first prize of $99,700 in the main event of a four-day festival of poker that included Pot Limit Omaha (PLO), No-Limit Hold’em (NLHE), and Flip-Out style contests. The $1,500 freezeout style main event created a total prizepool of $445,000, and of the 38 players who made the money, 33 of them were from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
It was a wonderful victory for Zhang, who defeated his fellow countryman Yonggang Wang, in heads-up action – particularly when you figure into the equation his runner-up appearance in the 2014 Beijing Millions.
The 2014 Beijing Millions was the first major poker contest to be held in Mainland China, and the 2,732-player field created a record as the largest ever live poker tournament to be held outside of the US. That record was broken by the 2014 Grosvenor United Kingdom & Ireland (GUKPT) Goliath event when Ryan Foster defeated a field of 3,394 players.
