Canada’s Milos Raonic was listed as a 33-1 shot to win Wimbledon by many bookmakers, and he was a darkhorse bet for many gamblers to pull the upset. That won’t be happening now, Raonic was forced out of the tournament after falling and suffering a right hip injury in a second round match.
Raonic was up a break and serving at 2-1 early in the first set against Gilles Muller of Luxembourg when he slipped on the grass and fell awkwardly. After holding serve, Raonic was forced to retire due to his injury.
While Raonic had his hopes of Wimbledon glory dashed by injury, two sisters have overcome injuries to put themselves in contention for the Wimbledon crown.
Five-time champion Venus Williams needed three sets and nearly three hours to overcome the oldest player in the field Wednesday and reach the third round at Wimbledon.
The defending Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams also advanced in her match by defeating Aravane Rezai of France 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
For both Williams sisters it has been a tough road leading up to Wimbledon. Both sisters have suffered injuries that sidelined them. Venus was forced to pull out of the Australian due to injury and Serena has battled injuries and health problems all year long.
If the passion these sisters have for the game was ever doubted, those doubts were put to rest when tears of joy of being able to compete and play tennis at high level streamed down Serena’s face after her opening round victory.
