The odds may not be in favor of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight champion Conor McGregor should the hundred million dollar mega-bout between him and retired undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. pushes through.
As the prospect of a fight between the two different ring fighters gains steam, fans of boxing and mixed martial arts have quickly painted the possible outcome of the Mayweather-McGregor bout, and the whole picture doesn’t look good for the Irish fighter.
Boxing legend Roy Jones, Jr. and UFC commentator Joe Rogan have both predicted Mayweather to be victorious – and millions of dollars richer – after his boxing duel with McGregor.
Fancy MMA reported that Jones picked “Money” over “The Ghost” as the possible winner in their fantasy bout, saying the UFC champion cannot go toe-to-toe against a pound-for-pound fighter.
The former heavyweight champion is convinced that Mayweather will easily demolish McGregor in a boxing match.
“He can’t beat Floyd in no boxing match, are you serious? He struggled with Nate Diaz and Nate Diaz is not an A-class boxer. You think Conor McGregor got a chance at boxing Floyd Mayweather,” Jones pointed out.
“Conor McGregor would be wasting Floyd’s time,” he said.
There’s a possibility, however, that Mayweather will taste his first defeat if the duel is settled inside an octagon ring.
“If Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather fight in MMA, Conor McGregor will fuck him up. He will fuck him up…But, in a boxing match, I can’t imagine a world where Floyd Mayweather doesn’t fuck [McGregor] up. In a boxing match I think Floyd Mayweather is arguably the greatest boxer of all time…He’s just so much better. And if people don’t know, if you think you’re really good and then you get in there and box a guy like that, he will fucking expose the shit out of you,” Rogan told MMA Fighting.
Boxing and MMA betting odds expert Joey Odessa agrees that McGregor is coming to the boxing ring as the underdog.
In his website, Odessa said one sportsbook opened with Mayweather set as a huge -10,000 favourite with McGregor a +1200 underdog.
“Let’s keep things real. Floyd would fight Conor one time and Conor would get schooled so badly he’d have to register two losses on his boxing record,” Odessa said. “One day, the whole world will finally get over the whole boxing versus MMA thing. They are two different sports.”
