99% of Aussies oppose internet filtering, gov’t doesn’t care

Since we last reported on the Australian government’s proposed internet filter — ostensibly designed to curb child porn and such, but a leaked list of sites facing the ax included a dentist, a pet-care facility and a school cafeteria consultant — a poll was conducted by the Sydney Morning Herald that revealed 99% of Australians were opposed to the notion of enacting a great firewall similar to that imposed by the likes of China or Iran. As one wag puts it, the government’s plan is akin to “trying to ban burglaries by banning pictures of crowbars.” Read more.
