Remarkable footage has emerged of the botched robbery of a bookmaker in the UK where the perpetrator was given quite the surprise. The wannabe robber trotted into the bookies with weapon in hand, as you do when you have “F” all money for your next fix of crack and want an easy target. That’s how it seems right now anyway. Walk to counter. Threaten assistant. Go round back and grab money. Run out of the shop whilst customers stand there startled. The “stand there startled” part is the bit that this shop was missing.
When the knife-wielding fiend went behind the counter at the Coral outlet in Reading, Berkshire, on 28 March, he was met with a challenge. The “run the gauntlet of customers with stools” challenge can be seen at this link and, although they didn’t prevent him stealing £1,000, they put up quite a fight. Coral and the Association of British Bookmakers Ltd have put up a reward of £5,000.
Now who says the punters aren’t up for a ruckus?! Also lives up to the community spirit adage championed by government studies in the UK, US and Sweden.
This same community spirit will be blossoming in one corner of Pennsylvania after a resort in the state was awarded a casino license in the state. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board voted 6-1 yesterday to award the state’s final miniature “resort” casino license to the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in the south west of the state.
It will mean that the resort is permitted to operate 600 slot machines and 50 table games. The casino beat out competition from three other applicants and will now be nurturing the kind of community spirit that people come to expect. Oh, and following Dr Patrick Basham’s retort that retirees who “remain active in the community and constantly engage in social activity, often, largely or exclusively through gambling, live happier and healthier lives.” PA’s retirees should be flocking!
