First there was the Great Firewall of China, then there were plans for the Great Bushfirewall of Australia and now it’s Turkey’s turn. Freedom of speech is clearly a luxury more governments believe they can do without nowadays. Indeed the situation in Turkey, whose government has banned over 5,000 websites in the last three years including YouTube and has railed against international gambling operators targeting their citizens, is so bad it is becoming increasingly alienated from the very European Union it wishes to join.
