Jockeys are unquestionably the bravest sportsmen around. Cyclists are pretty masochistic but they get to have a breather when they’re going downhill, and boxers certainly need a pair of iron cojones to get into the ring with a fellow psycho, but at least they can hit back. There’s not much you can do when you’re thrown from a thoroughbred at 40 miles an hour into the path of an oncoming stampede. So after winning the Grand National Tony McCoy is 6/1 third favourite to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
