The Story
Australia wants to ensure that only adults will be able to access porn and gambling sites by proposing facial recognition to open the said websites. The country’s Department of Home Affairs reportedly told a parliamentary committee that the facial scans that the government already obtained could “assist in age verification.” Another benefit the government sees in implementing facial recognition for gambling sites is that it could deter access from self-excluded gamblers. However, privacy advocates are opposing the measure, saying private companies can access the people’s biometrics and could render it vulnerable to data breach.
