The Story

Japanese Prime Minister (PM) Shinzo Abe’s popularity rating took a nosedive after the controversial Integrated Resorts (IR) Implementation Bill cleared the House of Councillors last week.

The approval of the IR bill may not be the only thing to blame.

Nikkei Asian Review reported that voter support for Abe’s administration dropped by 7 points to 45% from 52% in late June 2018. While he continued to enjoy a majority approval rating among male voters, Abe’s popularity among Japanese women dropped 9 points to 36%. The numbers were in sharp contrast to his surging popularity in June following the denuclearization talks between U.S. and North Korea. The PM’s number may have suffered after his government was criticized for supposedly prioritizing the IR Bill over relief efforts during the severe flooding in Western Japan.
