The Story

Five Asian countries have taken illegal betting stings up a notch as the 2018 World Cup enters the quarterfinals.

Thailand is in the lead with the most number of illegal betting arrests.

Thailand deputy police spokesman Krisana Patanacharoen said authorities had so far arrested 9,420 individuals on World Cup betting charges, roughly 5,000 more than those arrested in the last World Cup. Meanwhile, police from Vietnam and Singapore busted illegal online betting operations, resulting in the arrest of 39 individuals. In Malaysia, 342 bookies have been collared since the start of World Cup raids last June 29.
