The Story

Despite ramping up efforts to detect illegal gambling activity, Macau authorities have yet to arrest an illegal sports betting operator during the 2018 World Cup season.

The current situation is starkly different from what happened in 2014.

Around this time in 2014, Macau police had busted what could have been the largest illegal sports betting operation that it has ever seen. The betting ring reportedly handled HKD5b (US$645m) worth of World Cup wagers. The police said that despite the lack of sports betting-related arrests, they will continue their inspections until the end of the tournament.
