The Story

Finland's National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) is interested in studying the effect of a nasal spray version of Naloxone, a widely-used anti-overdose drug, on problem gamblers.

What are the details of the research?

The new research will be a step up from an earlier study which showed that a Naloxone pill treatment holds promise for helping problem gamblers. The pill takes effect an hour or so after it is ingested, so researchers are hoping that a nasal spray will be able to provide real-time relief. The new three-month research will begin later this month with 130 gamblers, and results are expected to come out in 2019.

Other countries like Australia and the UK have also resorted to using drugs like Naltrexone, which is usually used to help heroin addicts, to treat problem gamblers.
