The Story

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) will become a purely regulatory body should a new gambling bill is passed into law.

So PAGCOR becomes what now?

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has co-sponsored House Bill No. 6514, which seeks to remove PAGCOR’s licensing powers. Through the bill, PAGCOR will be transformed into a new regulatory agency called Philippine Amusements and Gaming Authority (PAGA).

Is this move good or bad for the Philippines?

Many analysts are backing the bill as it will assure foreign investors, who are wary of PAGCOR’s dual personality, that the Southeast Asian country is taking a firm stance on regulating its gambling industry.

Las Vegas hasn’t always been a legal gambling hotspot. The city was founded in 1905 but a federal anti-gambling law shut down betting activities in 1910. The ban was overturned in 1931.
