The Story | |||||
Poland's national prosecutor is reopening a probe into an alleged corruption scandal involving seven Ministry of Finance officials who approved illegal slot machines. |
Give me the details of the case first. |
Between 2006 and 2009, the government officials allegedly registered 78,000 slots as low-stakes/payout amusement with prizes (AWP) machines rather than high-stakes/payout slots, which were restricted under the country’s 1992 gambling law. The Regional Prosecutor then cleared the officials and closed the investigation last March. |
Why is the case being reopened? |
Deputy Prosecutor General Bogdan Swieczkowski is investigating whether the regional prosecutor's decision to clear the officials was justified. |
This is another step showing Poland's tightening grip on gambling. |
Indeed. Poland introduced new laws in 2009 aimed at controlling its gambling market, which included banning slots outside of casinos. This led to the closure of around 60,000 slots and AWP machines by 2015. |
So Poland does not have slots now? |
They have slots, but these are controlled by national lottery operator Totalizator Sportowy. The amended Polish Gambling Act of 2016 gave Totalizator Sportowy the sole permission to operate slots outside casinos. Aside from slots, Totalizator Sportowy has a monopoly on online casino products. |
Takeaway |
Poland is beefing up its efforts in controlling its gambling market. The country's offensive is scaring not only officials who have done illegal acts but also innocent international operators. |
