The Story

Alexander Vinnick may soon head home after a Greek court approved the request to extradite him to Russia.

How did that happen?

The Council of Judges in Thessaloniki has upheld the request to extradite Vinnik to Russia. Vinnick, who stands accused for allegedly laundering more than $4 billion through the BTC-e digital currency exchange he operated, will only have to shell out US$11,500 for fraud charges once he returns to his home country.

That fine is just a drop in the bucket!

The fine is a pittance compared to the $12 million in fines that the U.S. wanted Vinnick to pay. BTC-e has also been slapped with a $110 million bill for failing to meet anti-money laundering requirements in the U.S.

But isn’t it that he was supposed to go to the U.S.?

You recalled that one accurately. The latest court decision was a result of the appeal of the Russian government of the earlier decision ordering Vinnick to be sent to the U.S. to face charges.  The Russian Foreign Ministry called the Greek court’s decision then as a violation of the international law.

Vinnick’s ticket to Moscow might have to wait.

It is because Vinnick’s fate still on the hands of the Greek justice minister who decides where to send people accused of crimes in times of competing requests

Takeaway

Russia shouldn’t be cocky on its win to get its citizen back to its country and give Vinnick a gentle tap instead of a slap as the decision is still subject to appeal.
