  Cuomo have had enough

The Story

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned that the exclusivity of the Seneca Nation of Indians' casino in the Niagara Falls is in danger unless the tribe resumes paying its revenue shares to the state.

Oh no, he did not.

Well, he already did. A spokesman for Cuomo told Buffalo News that the governor would authorize a new commercial casino in the area should the tribe continue to withhold its revenue-sharing payments to the state and the local host communities where the Seneca gaming venues operate.

But why is the tribe not paying its dues to the state?

In March, the Senecas announced that its three casinos would stop remitting 25% of their slot machine revenue--worth $125 million per year--starting April 1. It argued that its gaming compact allows them to stop paying when their initial 14-year term concluded in 2016.

This is not the first time that Cuomo and the Senecas butted heads.

In 2013, Cuomo made a similar threat when the two parties were at odds with regard to local racetracks adding slots to their product offerings. In the end, it was the state that backed down after admitting that it violated the terms of the gaming compact with the tribe.

Takeaway

Should Cuomo pushes through with his threat, the tribe is set to lose big bucks as their Niagara Falls casino is their most lucrative gaming venue. But nonetheless, the tribe will remain firm in not remitting payments to the state.
