Another man’s loss is another man’s gain

The Story

The English Football Association (EFA) has scrapped its sponsorship deal with UK bookmakers Ladbrokes and has announced that it won’t accommodate any ties with betting operators in the future.

The deal was called off three years ahead of schedule.

The EFA reached a four-year deal with Ladbrokes last year as the league’s official betting partner. Yet, things fell apart when the EFA decided to review last month whether it is appropriate for a sport-governing body to partner with betting operators.

Negative press on the players’ gambling activities has started the fall out.

Some UK players were involved in controversies about their gambling activities, like Joey Barton and Sutton United keeper Wayne Shaw. However, EFA chairman Greg Clarke has clarified that the review of its deal with Ladbrokes was not because of these scandals.

But other football associations are not taking EFA’s lead.

While EFA burns its relationship with Ladbrokes, other professional football associations are happily forming partnerships with gambling operators as their sponsors.

Let’s have a rundown of these deals.

In the UK, Manchester City have partnered with UK-licensed K8.com as its official Asian betting partner while FC Bournemouth and Brentford FC have tied up with M88 and LeoVegas, respectively, for shirt deals. Meanwhile,  Dutch football legends AFC Ajax have inked a new official Asian Betting Partnership with KB88 (Kasinobet88) and French Ligue 1 clubs FC Nantes and Girondins de Bordeaux stepped up their partnerships with Winamax.

Takeaway

A football club’s loss is another club’s treasure so it won’t be surprising if EFA might reconsider its position on partnering with betting operators.
