The Story

Billionaire Carl Icahn was able to mine gold from the still unfinished Fontainebleau casino-hotel in Las Vegas after he was able to unload it for more than four times of what he paid for it seven years ago.

Icahn was able to score the property after being hit by the 2008 recession.

The billionaire investor sold the Fontainebleau for $600m to an affiliate of development and investment firm The Witkoff Group LLC, and New Valley LLC, the real estate arm of Florida-based holding company the Vector Group. His group previously bought the Fontainebleau in February 2010 for $148m.

He was able to score an impressive $457m profit.

Icahn called the $457m profit as “an example of our ‘contrarian’ modus operandi,” the aim of which is to seek out distressed properties, add a coat of paint and some new shingles, “and ultimately sell them for large gains.”

But not everything that Icahn touched turned to gold.

The Fontainebleau deal certainly looks better than Icahn’s sale of the Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City. Icahn’s cash injections in the Trump Taj Mahal were not enough for him to keep the property.

Takeaway

Icahn sure scored a great deal on the Fontainebleau and with the property now off his hands, the new owners will now be able to unlock its potential along with the other casinos in the Vegas Strip.
