If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the
point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time-a tremendous whack.

The Story

South Korean casinos are hoping that their country’s diplomatic spat with China would end soon so that they can welcome Chinese high rollers again at their tables.

One particular casino badly needs the geopolitical tension to cease.

Gongzi Jeju, the newest foreigners-only casino on South Korea’s Jeju island, held its official grand opening on Sunday. The property boasts a 40k-square-foot gaming floor featuring 45 gaming tables and 24 electronic gambling machines.

Gongzi Jeju capitalizes on its location.

Gongzi Jeju’s operators were keen to point out their venue’s proximity to Jeju’s international airport and shipping docks. The casino’s COO Lysa Evans said that the owner’s vision for Gongzi Jeju is “to create a gaming experience in a location that was accessible, with fantastic natural scenery and relaxing entertainment.”

But such beauty might go to waste if it sits empty.

The ongoing diplomatic spat between the two countries has put South Korea on the losing end. With Beijing cancelling group tours to South Korea, Jeju’s Chinese tourist numbers fell 56.2% in March and had fallen over 89% by the end of June.

South Korean casinos place their hopes on their new government.

Beijing issued the travel ban as a response to the plan of the US to set-up a missile system in South Korea. However, the deployment of the missile batteries were halted in May after the new government was elected. But since May, there has been no sign that Chinese officials are preparing to lift the embargo.

Takeaway

The geopolitical tension between China and South Korea puts the latter’s foreigners-only casinos at risk. South Korean officials should exert more effort in convincing their Chinese counterparts to stop its travel ban.
