The Story

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a complaint that will block the proposed merger of daily fantasy sports operators DraftKings and FanDuel.

Why is the FTC being such a cockblocker?

The FTC claimed that the combined entity of the two companies would result to the control of over 90% of America’s DFS market. Tad Lipsky, acting director of the FTC’s Bureau of Competition, said that the merger “would deprive customers of the substantial benefits of direct competition” between the two DFS giants.

The two companies are not having it.

In a joint statement, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins and FanDuel CEO Nigel Eccles expressed their disappointment with the FTC action and that they may likely ask federal courts for an injunction to block the FTC’s action.

The FTC’s theory seems far-fetched.

While the two companies have enlarged the DFS player pool, neither company is believed to be profitable due to the costly marketing wars they have waged against each other. With the FTC’s complaint, DraftKings and FanDuel will continue to operate as separate companies at least through the upcoming NFL season.

Takeaway

The hiccup in the merger of the two companies will only mean that they have to find other sources to finance their operations.
