The Story

British Columbia authorities have announced the arrest of nine suspects involved in a gang that allegedly laundered millions of dollars through local casinos.

What do authorities know about this gang?

They said that the gang reportedly has connections to mainland China and other countries. Those who were arrested were accused of money laundering, extortion, and facilitating illegal gambling operations.

This has inside job screaming all over it.

The authorities have remained tight-lipped on some details of the incident including the names of the casinos involved. However, they said that none of the arrested suspects were casino employees.

What was the reaction of the local casino industry?

They were surprised. British Columbia Gaming Industry Association executive director Peter Goudron said that the scale of the money laundering allegations is surprising, “given the robust [anti-money laundering] procedures in place at BC casinos we are unaware how this could have taken place.”

Takeaway

The arrests should serve as a wake-up call for authorities and casino operators to strengthen their security measures.
