SPORTSBET FAILS TO TICKLE AUSSIE GOVERNMENT’S FUNNY BONE

The Story

Sportsbet’s new TV ad drew flak from the Australian sports minister, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority and other anti-gambling personalities for supposedly making light of athlete’s use of performance enhancing drugs.

Such fragile snowflakes. Tell me more about the ad.

The 90-second TV ad promoted Sportsbet’s “juiced-up” Android app and featured former Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson who won gold in the 100m sprint at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games—only to return the medal two days later after tests revealed that he used steroids.

Ha! Sportsbet has always been cheeky in their promos!

They should know that! Aside from Johnson, the ad also featured a fast American cyclist (who may or may not be intended to remind you of Lance Armstrong), a surprisingly buff female swimmer, and a massive weightlifter.

Apparently, these naysayers refuse to see the punchline.

That’s exactly what Sportsbet thought. The online betting operator also insisted that the ad had been approved and rated by Commercials Advice before it was aired. Sportsbet also said that while they don’t condone the use of PEDs, the company had no regrets about “injecting some humor into advertising” and has no intention of withdrawing the ad.

Takeaway

Haters can eat their hearts out as Sportsbet’s cheeky ad is here to stay.
