UK bookies aren’t having Labour’s BS

The Story

UK bookmakers are up in arms after a leaked Labour Party election manifesto showed that it plans to reduce the fixed-odds betting terminal betting stakes.

Walk me through it.

Sure. The draft manifesto has revealed how Labour wants to reduce the FOBT betting stakes from the c £100 to just £2. Aside from this, the left-leaning party also wants to “legislate to increase the delay in between spins on these games in order to reduce the addictive nature of the games.”

Ha. Nothing new about their stance, really.

Exactly.  Labour has been always against FOBTs. It can be recalled that in 2014, Labour’s former party leader Ed Miliband condemned FOBTs and tagged it as “a magnet for crime and antisocial behaviour.”

Anything else?

The Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) slammed the party’s proposal, saying that it would cost 20,000 people to lose jobs and the government to lose millions in taxes. The bookies also said that reducing stakes was “not the most effective option for minimizing gambling-related harm.”

Takeaway

UK bookies are fighting an uphill battle in keeping the betting stakes of FOBTs as they do not have allies in UK’s two major parties.
