It is Cinco de Mayo weekend once again folks, and there will be no better way to celebrate it than to watch two Mexican fighters settle the bad blood between them in the ring.
Mexican boxing superstars Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will square off at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night – a bout touted as the biggest fight in Mexican boxing history.
This fight is definitely more than just the title.
Mexicans have seen lots of epic fights between countrymen. Probably the most memorable boxing match in Mexican history is the epic trilogy of fights between Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.
Who would also forget the four-fight rivalry between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez, and the 1977 battle between unbeaten bantamweight champions Carlos Zarate and Alfonso Zamora.
Now the time has come for Alvarez and Chavez Jr. to settle the score.
Alvarez, who is still the middleweight champion, is fighting for glory as he wants to take the title of being the most popular and undisputed best fighter in Mexico. Beating Chavez Jr. will also be his ticket to a superfight with Gennady Golovkin.
Chavez Jr., on the other hand, is fighting for survival, especially if he wants those big bucks keep coming in his pockets. One disappointing performance from Chavez means a ticket to retirement.
According to Bodog, Canelo is coming in the match as a sizable 2/13 favorite as he aim at notching a seventh win since losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. more than three years ago.
Boxing fans believe that both players will give a good fight, with most of them predicting that the match will reach beyond the 9th round (4/7). The oddsmaker predict that the match will not end in a draw (22/1) or with Chavez knocking down Canelo (11/1).
Still, it goes without saying that nothing yet is sealed until the two fighters meet on Saturday night. But one thing’s for sure, whatever the outcome will be, both players will make their boxing ancestors proud.
