Ireland’s own Emmett Mullin has won the UK & Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) after fending off a field of 698 players over five days at the Radisson Hotel in Galway, collecting the €100,000 ($143,451) top prize.
Notably, the 26 year old won his seat to the €770 buy-in event via a €55 satellite tournament at PokerStars.com. Commenting on his success, he was flabbergasted. “It’s unbelievable. I’ve actually won a tournament as big as this, with such a tough field…It’s been a bit of a drain but there’s a buzz at the minute. We’ll have a few drinks tonight,” he said in a report by PokerStars Blog.
This is how the final rolled: Gilligan was the chip leader (2.489m) when the game kicked off with Emmett Mullin lying 5th equal with 1.003m in chips. Mullin then took a 6.42m to 3.585m chip lead after his set became a full house on the river to beat a turned straight by Gilligan.
The final hand of the tournament was played after Mullin was dealt pocket threes to his opponent’s pocket sevens with all the chips then going in on a 6-3-2 flop. With no help from the board, Gilligan finished runner-up while Emmett Mullin was crowned the 2012 UKIPT Galway Grand Final Champion.

Meanwhile, over in Brazil – Germany’s Daniele Nestola has won the Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) Grand Final after defeating 367 players over four days to claim the trophy (and not forgetting that top prize equivalent to $166,974).
Beginning the final day 4 as chip leader, Daniele managed to fend off a table of eight to make his was those sweet smelling green papers. As the PokerStars Blog reports, the highlight was when Nestola with pocket aces subsequently eliminated a short-stacked Jonathan Markovits (Ac-Jc) in 5th, followed by Morbiducci in 4th who pushed with K-8 into the K-7 of Nestola, with a 7 hitting on the flop.
A 3 on the turn completed Nestola’s hand and with all the money then going in, Gasperino Nicolas finished the runner-up for R$250,000 and Nestola was crowned LAPT Grand Final winner.
