Doesn’t Fred Done ever learn?!
That’s what many people are asking themselves after he paid out on his beloved Manchester United winning the Premier League title before the season is over – and it comes after a calamitous 2012 that saw City win the title on the final day. Anyone that bet with Betfred that United would win the title have now been paid out after United took a 12 point lead over their cross-city rivals after beating Everton 2-0.
Done commented: “After it all went wrong last year, my missus made me promise to never do it again. But with United 12 points clear with just 12 games left the title race is over – so my punters can collect their dough on United.”
That cost him over £1million and his decision to pay out early again has cost another £300,000 but we think he’s got a slightly better chance than last year of being proved right – if only because City have been so poor over the past few weeks.
Eagle-eyed readers will remember that Fred first paid out early on a United win back in 1998 when they blew an identical 12 point lead to Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal and last year’s figure was five points with seven games remaining.
Done is also confident that Sir Alex Ferguson’s side can go on to win the treble this season for the first time this season and added: “I honestly think this side can add the Champions League and the FA Cup. I had my doubts at the start of the season but I believe this side is better than the treble winning team of 1999. It’s 20/1 to happen and as a United fan, I would love to pay out on that.”
