There was plenty of toothy grins, back pats and double fisted handshakes for the billionaire investor Carl Icahn when he met with the Mississippi Gaming Commission. I’m a little surprised no one brought a baby for him to kiss.
Icahn has instantly become a very, very important man in Mississippi business, with his purchase of eight bankrupt Tropicana casinos, including the Horizon Vicksburg Casino and the Jubilee Casino in Vicksburg.
Icahn commented on a number key issues in the casino business. He first made it clear that the middle American states are the best future markets for the casino business. As for Vegas, Icahn felt overbuilding, online gambling and the economy had hurt the Vegas market.
Mississippi has every reason to be excited, Icahn’s presence may attract other investors to explore the new casino land of milk and honey. Of course, few will probably actually physically go there themselves, I mean, we’re still talking Mississippi here, it’s not exactly New York the gambling center of the universe, London.
