Fearlessness is like a muscle. I know from my own life that the more I exercise it,
the more natural it becomes to not let my fears run me.

The Story

The Nevada gambling industry welcomed the New Year with big changes: a decent 2017 revenue growth for the casinos in the state and the appointment of the first female gaming board chair.

There was a pronounced disparity between revenue
and profit growth among casinos.

According to the Nevada Gaming Abstract, 272 casinos generated a total revenue of $26.2b in FY17, up 3.7% from the previous year, while net income increased by 59% to $1.55b. The disparity in revenue was more notable between casinos on the Strip and those located in Downtown Las Vegas. Casinos on the Strip saw their revenue rise 3.9% to $17.7b, while profits leaped 191.4% to $814m. Meanwhile, casinos in Downtown Las Vegas posted a revenue growth of 10.3% to $1.2b, and profits increased by 111.3% to $110.3m.

The new gaming board chair took a gamble in taking her post.

Nevada Senator Becky Harris was appointed as the new chairperson of the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB), the first female to chair the gaming board. Harris needs to be reappointed in January 2019 as she continues the term of resigned NGCB chief A.G. Burnett.
