The Story

Buenos Aires Gov. María Eugenia Vidal is stepping up her administration's campaign to keep a tight lid on gambling by ordering the closure of three casinos in her province.

Prior to the closures, Buenos Aires had 12 casinos and 46 bingo halls.

In justifying her move to shut down the casinos, Vidal claimed that gaming had failed to boost tourism. The governor also debunked claims that she is favoring illegal gambling operations.

Aside from closing casinos, she also prosecuted operators of unauthorized online gambling sites and asked online gambling sites from other provinces to geo-block punters from her province. Only seven casinos are left to operate in Argentina's biggest province, all of which will be part of a new tender process.
