The Story

Residents of Taiwan's outlying Kinmen islands have rejected a proposal to authorize casino gambling.

How did the residents vote?

Kinmen residents went to the polls on Saturday to approve or reject the proposal to establish an "international holiday resort complex" that would dedicate 5% of its physical space to casino gambling. Nearly 90% of the 24% of total voters who turned out for the vote thumbed down the proposal.

What a disappointing voters' turnout!

The referendum held in the Kinmen Islands could be traced back to the go-signal given by the Taiwanese national government in 2009. During that time, the national government authorized the construction of casinos in the islands, provided local residents approved the plans via referendums.

But were they the first to reject the proposal?

No. Two previous referendums in the Penghu islands also rejected casino proposals by similarly large margins.

Setting up a casino in these islands is a big challenge.

That is true. There's been scant interest from major international casino operators in establishing a presence in Taiwan's outlying islands due to a lack of critical infrastructure. Also, China, its biggest target market, isn't exactly in the best terms with Taiwan.

Takeaway

The vote against setting up a casino in the Kinmen Islands would definitely weaken any future efforts to authorize casino gambling, at least in the short term.
