The Story

A voter referendum could undo the controversial new gambling laws approved by Switzerland’s legislature.

Let’s see what the new rules contain.

On Friday, Swiss legislators gave final approval to the country’s new gambling rules, which will allow local land-based casinos to offer online casino and poker games for the first time. The bill also requires local internet service providers to block the domains of internationally licensed gambling sites.

But critics blasted the last requirement.

Local ISP groups took arms and slammed the government for assigning them extra responsibilities without compensation. In connection with this move, the Internet Society Switzerland Chapter (ISOC-CH) announced that it would support a referendum aimed at overturning the new gambling law.

Can they do that?

Swiss law states that if a group can collect 50,000 signatures from its citizens, any piece of legislation can be put to a national referendum. The push for signatures will start on October 10, and the organizers will have 100 days to garner and validate the necessary 50,000 names.

The push for the referendum enjoys support from various groups.

Aside from the ISOC-CH, other groups who signified their support include the Young Liberals, the Green Party, the so-called Pirate Party, and the non-profit group Digitale Gesellschaft.

Takeaway

A historic move to allow online gambling and poker can be delayed should the referendum push through. The government should act fast and meet the critics in the middle so as to not put years of lobbying efforts to allow online gambling and poker to go to waste.
