The Story

Australian-listed Crown Resorts Ltd. was in the offense as it fights back the allegations that its poker machines were designed to cause gambling addiction.

This is not just your ordinary case in court.

The case, which was filed by problem gambler Shonica Guy, is based on the allegation that the Crown’s popular Dolphin Treasure pokie machines were designed to entrap users like her. She wants the court to declare the game to be unlawful.

What’s her basis?

Guy said that the Dolphin Treasure machines have symbols that are unevenly distributed across its five reels. The final reel contains fewer winning symbols in order to make it harder for punters to win.

But the casino was not having any of it.

Barrister Neil Young QC, who represented Crown in the hearing, described Guy’s claims as “fanciful propositions.” He said that Crown’s machines provide players the information on the various odds of achieving the top-five and bottom-five winning combinations of symbols. The lawyer said that it is basic for players to read the information before playing.

Crown also emphasized that it is maintaining a lawful business.

The operator said that it does not have a hand in designing the game but only made it available to the public.

Takeaway

The outcome of this case will have drastic implications on the Australian casino industry. Should Gay win, any gambler—worse, even those who are deemed problematic—can deflect the blame of their addiction to casinos that merely provided the games.
